Capitol Reef NP and Escalante-Grand Staircase NM, Utah

$1575 USD

October 21-26, 2018 (5 days, 5 nights)

Leaders: Jed Manwaring and Brenda Tharp.  Class size limited to 12.

Capitol Reef National Park is still an unspoiled, outstanding gem in the national park system. Far from the overwhelming crowds of tour-buses, in the central part of Utah’s majestic red-rock region, this park contains majestic scenery and intimate scenes to equal those of other more overrun parks. Massive cliffs tower overhead, along with soaring arches of red-orange sandstone, while rivers and creeks flow along the base of cliffs, reflecting the yellow cottonwoods, blue sky, clouds, and red rock in an riot of abstract colors. Stands of brilliant golden cottonwoods stand in color contrast against the reddish walls. Swirling sandstone, bentonite clay mounds and many different geologic layers and formations combine to provide dramatic  photographic opportunities.

After several trips to this wonder-filled place, we are excited to share our favorite locations with guests. On this photo workshop, we’ll be exploring both known and lesser known locations within and just outside the park boundaries. In Escalante-Grand Staircase Nat’l Monument, we’ll be photographing colorful hoodoo formations, grand vistas, swirling sandstone, and more as we venture into areas surrounding the towns of Boulder and Escalante, and down Hole-in-the-Rock road to a remote arch. Both locations will provide awesome photography opportunities.

The workshop is open to all levels, however a good working knowledge of your camera and the basics of photography will enhance your experience and your results. We devote one-on-one time to all while in the field, and with a maximum of 10 guests, and two leaders, the ratio is low, providing ample hands-on time if you want/need it.

We’ll spend 4 nights in Torrey, Utah, for our Capitol Reef exploration, and 3 nights in Escalante to further our forays into magnificent landscapes. Each day, we will head out for a sunrise session to capture the warm light as it bathes arches, hoodoos, or reflects into the river; back into town for breakfast, and then head out again, possibly to a slot canyon or somewhere in the shade to work intimate scenes. Each afternoon, we’ll head in a different direction to explore and photographic stunning landscapes with the last warm rays of the sun. On one of the days, we’ll make a very long journey through the northernmost region of the Waterpocket Fold, to photograph bentonite clay mounds, basalt rocks, and more, conditions permitting. Our days will be full seeking out dramatic compositions of the grand and the intimate lansdcape. Mid-workshop, we’ll make the very scenic drive to Escalante, arriving in time to check-in and head out for sunset light. The next two full days we’ll explore sections of the Escalante, including a day down the Hole-in-the-rock Road, a remote section full of photo possibilities. Workshop ends after checkout on October 26.
